Holidays in Greece
Christmas in Greece is a very traditional and celebrated holiday which is celebrated for 6 days starting from Christmas day till January, 6. This celebration results in Greeks decorating Christmas trees, and boats. Greeks also have children go to house to house singing Christmas carols to people, the children who do this used to be treated with sweets and all sorts of goods, but now they are treated by being paid cash to sing Christmas holidays. Another myth they believe in is that during the six day period little kallikántzari (hobgoblins) appear from the Earth's core and sneak into houses startling people and frightening them by climbing through chimneys and any sort of open way that they can fit through. After the six day span of the Christmas holiday they are said to disappear and head back to the Earth's core when the water is blessed in Greece. Easter is one of the most sacred holidays in Greece and is celebrated by many with different kind of events and foods such as, red eggs which symbolize the blood of Christ and also prevent all the evil from people to be removed. Another food they enjoy is tsoureki, and biscuits. The Greeks celebrate this holiday on the Sunday after the full moon of equinox and is not movable. The housewives try not to do housework, but instead go to their church and help decorate Epitaph (Bier of Christ) with flowers, while in the evening the Epitaph procession takes place. On Saturday morning, preparations start for the festive dinner and a special soup is cooked called magiritsa. The following night people celebrate and sing together lasting till late at night while they enjoy cooked lamb.
